Following the capture of Fort William, Calcutta, in 1756, 146 British soldiers and East India Company employees were allegedly held overnight in a dungeon in the fort by troops of Siraj ud–Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal. John Zephaniah Howell, one of the survivors, claimed that only 23 survived. But his claim is widely disputed, and in fact the incident may not have occurred at all
